Bird Project

In 2004, we started a project to reintroduce suitable nesting habitats for birds of prey at Boidier Hurst.  Towards the end of the year, with thanks to Scouting users we have installed a number of bird boxes within the site.  Within the boundaries you will now find four small owl boxes, a tawny own box, a barn owl box, a kestrel box and one tit box.

In recent years we have introduced additional boxes to help provide a suitable nesting environment for a variety of birds.  In particular we are hope to install a small barn owl box for the transit shelter, bat boxes and tit boxes. It has been difficult keeping the squirrels away from the owl boxes as these are an ideal size.

A walk around the site looking for the boxes, nests, or bugs within rotting trees can be quite relaxing whilst helping towards an activity for your group.

If you wish to build a box for Boidier Hurst you may find the attached guides beneficial.  Please email birdproject@boidierhurst.org.uk if you have any queries.

Barn Owl | Little Owl | Tawny Owl | Kestrel | Bat Box | Tit Box

Please do not install nesting boxes on site without notifying the Service Crew in advance.

Can you find where all of the boxes are on site and observe if anything is living within them?

Great Tits Moved In
The Boidier Hurst Bird Project is showing signs of success as species are pairing up and making the most of what the camp site has to offer.

Over the last twelve months, Cubs and Scouts have donated owl or bird nesting boxes to the site and the Service Crew are pleased to confirm that the first occupants are now under surveillance.  A pair of Great Tits have been spotted flying in and out of the one tit box adjacent to the main field on several occasions.

If you are planning a trip to the site with your Colony, Pack or Troop, why not take a few minutes of quiet time with a few young people to see if you can spot the hive of activity.

There are still dozens of prime locations around the site where we could house other nesting or roosting boxes so if you are looking for an activity to compliment your program and training scheme, why not build a box for Boidier!  Whether it's to house an owl, robin or bat,  plans are available to download from www.boidierhurst.org.uk.

Recent News (April 2009) : There have been sightings of Tawny Owls on the camp site and the Little Owls are very noisy at present. Several of the owl boxes have been damaged by the weather and squirrels in the last year so any new boxes for the site would be greatly welcomed.
